Covered Well

While looking at Mashuptown, I came across an interesting thing to mention (rather briefly, I know, but I'm running out of steam right about now), and it's combining an original version of a song with a cover of it. As mentioned here, a famous example was A Plus D combining the original Crazy with Nelly Furtado's, which can be found on sites like BeeMP3.

The link I provided to Mashuptown also has the song that inspired me to do this, which is the two most famous versions of Tainted Love. No matter which one you prefer, you should enjoy this work from Copycat, where you hear the cover's vocals and music, but the music is changed so that it matches the beat of the Jones version, which to me makes it sound like Good Thing, funnily enough.

I know this is different, but combining a song with a later tune that samples the earlier tune, can also be pretty cool. For example, the aforementioned A Plus D and the song they have on their webpage of I Keep Forgettin' To Regulate, which makes you see what happens when Nate Dogg and Warren G sing directly over the song they sample rather than just using the sample and modifying it. Regulate is a song I rate pretty highly, by the way.

What A Trip

I was stumped as to what to mention here, but then I went over to Mashupciti, where regularly new tracks are posted by a variety of people.

Well, one recent one is from none other than DJ Z-Trip, a DJ who's been around for awhile and does music other than mashups. But, the tune he posted there is a classic mashup where he acted a beat and used the riff from Sweet Child o' Mine* and had Stevie Wonder singing Uptight over it.

* which, by the way, seems to be totally ripped off from Alice Cooper and his new wave song Clones. Yes, Alice doing new wave; it should be no surprise that it didn't work, but the song itself is cool. Given that Cooper later was on a GNR song, there must have been no hard feelings for the riff borrowing.

You can find various downloads from Trip on his website. I've actually see Trip before in concert, and sad to say I believe it was the last time he performed in that area. Given that I got a ticket for it for ONE DOLLAR... but I wrote about the experience (much too briefly, sadly) on my MySpace page here. If you ever have the chance to see one of his performances, go! As I wrote about it then, it was quite the experience. Unique music, a videoscreen filled with groovy stuff, the lights, sound... and with his relationship with EA, he was able to do the gimmick where some fans got to play Pac-Man on the videoscreen! No kidding. Like I say, go if you ever are able to, no matter the cost. With me, it had to be the best dollar I've ever spent.

(Many Of) The Best Mashups Of 2008

Hello everyone. As 2008 winds down in a matter of hours (to me, this year flew by, but recent years have been that way to me), an easy (but yet very informative) way to do a last post here this year is to direct you to four different sources of mashups which people have judged to be the best ones created this year.

The first one is the release of Best of Bootie 2008, compiled by DJ's Adrian & The Mysterious D. Besides the mix of 20 tunes, the page offers additional mashups that they enjoyed. While I'm surprised at some of the tunes they chose, their other three releases were quality, so I'm sure this one will also be worth downloading.

The second page is from Culture Bully. Here you have the top 15 mashups of the year, as designated by Chris DeLine. I haven't really downloaded any of the songs I'm not familiar with yet, but I'm sure it's a fine collection. Right now I'm downloading the song he thought was the best, which somehow combines THIRTY-SIX different songs into a 4 minute tune. I don't know how it can be done either, but that should be enough of an enticement for you to check out the link.

The third page is from someone at Culture Bully. Here you can download a mix of different songs that are (at least in one person's opinion) the best of the year. You can even download a mix of all the songs combined together into an album format.

The fourth page is, yep, from Culture Bully. Here is a page which contains FIFTEEN different DJ's offering up their opinions on the best tunes. Believe me, from those four pages, you'll get dozens upon dozens of different tunes which will fill out at least a few different burned CD's.

Happy Holidays

Hello everyone. I apologize for this being up a little later than planned, but I had to do other things first, including watching the Bears win against the Packers last night.

I’ll wish everyone a Happy Holidays, no matter which holiday you do or don’t celebrate during this time of year. To me, the Christmas season isn’t the same as it was back when I was a kid. I could explain why I feel this way, but I’ll spare you all. It just isn’t the same, let me reiterate.

Personally, many of the Christmas mashups I've heard aren't for me; that isn't a comment on the job done on them by all the people who participate in that kind of stuff. They do a great job with it; it just doesn't usually tickle my fancy for some reason. But, as it's the season, if you want to listen to them to be full of mirth, you can download songs here and here. The latter has links to a few dozen X-mas tunes, especially if you click on the links at the bottom of the page.

For a non-Christmas song, here is one (located here) I found from a guy known as Terry Urban. I'm not too familiar with him and his work, but his combining A Milli and Viva la Vida is interesting (although I'm not sure yet if I can call it "good" or not; I just know it's been popular as of this week) and something you can put at the end of your mashup CD if you don't care for it yourself.

Wild Mustang

I will continue my official/unofficial rule of bringing up all different mashup DJ's to spotlight on here. The newest one is a cat that broke out this year and has become popular, for good reason.

The man I'm referring to is the Dutch fellow known as MadMixMustang (M3), whose site is here. As Monday Night Football is about to start, I won't delve into which tracks you should download, although the MP3's that are mentioned as having been featured on radio or other blogs before is a good start. You can also download entire albums from him, which are worthwhile too.

As you can see from someone breaking out this year and becoming well known in this field, while the scene may not be as hyped as it was a few years ago, as long as people still have ideas to put the oddest songs together and they're able to do it well, then the mashup scene will still survive and probably thrive, in fact.

I'll be back a week from Monday with an appropriate seasonal mashup spotlight.

AC/DC Rules The Nation

To start things off, I’ll mention that an interesting read is here; it documents mashup DJ’s Adrian & The Mysterious D and their journey to Beijing to do a set there. I think Far East Asia is a very interesting place and one of these days I’d like to visit there, Lord willing.

To get on with it, the latest mashup I’ll spotlight is one I don’t believe I’ve posted on here before. I say that as before my old computer tower went kaput, I had a list of all the songs I have on here and my other music blog, and I had it burned to a disk. Where that disk is now, though… I guess I’ll do another list one of these days… “one of these days” meaning “before I do my next post on here”.

For now I’ll spotlight a song that I don’t believe I’ve mentioned before, and a mashup DJ I don’t believe I’ve mentioned before either. The track is on this Mashuptown page and it uses the music of Daft Punk’s Television Rules the Nation (from their Human After All album) and the vocals of AC/DC’s Back in Black. Sounds odd, but it works, and given that AC/DC is on the road now, it’s a natural to mention them at this time.

Where's The Clown Fired From The Cannon?

Ok, sorry about the technical difficulties there. It wasn’t my fault, I swear!

It is common for songs by Britney (do I need to state the last name?) to be mashed up; I mean, with most of her songs, there is much room for improvement! Anyway, while looking at Hypem, I randomly found a mashup involving Britney combined with a DJ I am not familiar with. The song can be located here.

Truth be told, I don’t have much info about the song or the person who put it together. I’m not sure who this Matt Green guy is (it’s such a common name, you can guess what happens when you try and Google the name), and I am not too familiar with Martin Solveig aside from the info here, but the mashup of one of his songs and the title track from Britney's newest album, Circus (and yikes, the cover of the album is atrocious, and it looks more like a real sex doll than it does resemble Britney!) is very cool, although long at 7 1/2 minutes. I'm sure y'all will like a dance track on here, as I rarely post them.
