Unfortunate News

As I've mentioned elsewhere, earlier today the computer I use at home went kaput. So, until I can get that fixed (either via having the tower fixed or getting a new one) I won't be online too much in the near future, and of course I won't be able to do this. So, I'll announce now that I'll be taking the rest of the month off and on November 1, I will return with a new post.

As I've mentioned before, the amount of people out there who have done worthwhile mashups is rather large, so for the most part, since I've been doing this there hasn't been too many artists I've spotlighted more than once. The trend will continue tonight, as I'll present to you a song by Seattle DJ Victor Menegaux. Last year he combined two songs which don't have a lot in common, aside from the constant use of one phrase, and that is "Hey!", which made it a natural to put together, and like peanut butter and bananas, it proves tastier than you may expect.

What I Like About Crunk combines The Romantics and their hit What I Like About You with Lil Jon's Snap Yo Fingers. Sounds odd, yes, but it works. You can download it here at a Mashuptown page which still has a working link for it. Heck, even the video for the mashup manages to work, despite how different the two acts and the original videos for the songs are.

One of these days I'll find another usage of Snap Yo Fingers, where it was combined with... The Pina Colada song? Yes! I'll be back on Friday night the 10th with a new mashup for your ears and eyes.

I Rock S*** Like Ronnie Dio

I'll keep it simple at this late hour. I'll post the full version of a song that was on the great Best of Bootie 2007 CD download. I say "full" as on the 2007 CD, they cut out the last half minute or so of the song (which is an instrumental, but still), so I figured I should direct you to my upload of the original.

The tune I'm talking about is More Than On Point, by DJ Topcat, combining Boston's More Than A Feeling with House of Pain's On Point. Yep, an obvious connection with both groups sharing the same hometown. It becomes a very catchy song, as the riff on More Than A Feeling is a classic. Whether or not the riff is borrowed from Louie Louie (or likewise, borrowed by Kurt Cobain for Smells Like Teen Spirit) is up for debate, but no matter the case, I'm glad it was used, and it turned out to be a great mashup.

Now, there is a 2008 version of the song on Topcat's website. Go ahead and download it. But, note that it's different from what he released last year; 2008 is fine, but I prefer the original one just a little bit more, so here it is.

I'll Show You Magic

To start this off I will mention that I now rip songs onto my computer using a different service. Up to a few days ago I used Roxio. But, I grew tired of it and I mainly used Nero to make burned CD's or DVD's of videos/data. So I uninstalled Roxio… before thinking about what I would use to rip songs onto my computer.

But, I realized that Windows Media Player, which I of course have, has the option of ripping music. So, I tried that and that's what I should have been using all along. I mean, more often than not it'll recognize the song, artist, and album that is being ripped, which is handy in various ways, including putting stuff on your hard drive so that you can play it in Audiosurf. Trust me on this.

Ok, now let's move along...

Sometimes I stumble upon mashups in the strangest of places. For example, at Madsplash, a wrestling page devoted to Japanese wrestling. They have a themes page and on THIS particular page you can get the theme to Skayde, which happens to be a mashup. It's a combo of Magic Stick and The Stroke, if you can believe it. Even more surprising, it was on a legit album. It was by Inhumanz. I'm not too familiar with them but this tune is pretty rad, so that's a feather in their cap. Now that you have the link, go download it.

On my other music blog I talked about the late Jerry Reed and offered up a link in there that will direct you to several other blogs talking about him and posting his most famous tunes.

Back in this entry I briefly mentioned how Reed's East Bound and Down was combined by Pheugoo with Usher's Yeah!, to great effect. Well, I'll finally offer up a direct link to it, even though it's easy to find on Project Playlist. Here is the direct download of a song that you wouldn't think would work, but by Joe does work.

I apologize for another delay, but since Friday night I've been swamped with things, from seeing the first two Indiana Jones movies on the big screen, to spending most of the day on the Atlantic coast of Florida. I'll have something up Monday night, I promise.

Feeling Cheeky

On this late Friday night, I will post another mashup tune from the UK, where definitely this trend has always been most popular there compared to the rest of the world.

The tune is from the Brit known as Cheekyboy. His main site is down for some reason, but I provided the link to the sites of his that still work (showing that he apparently is still in the game). The song I'm linking to here in particular (which I uploaded myself as I can't find it anywhere else) is a combination of Justin Timberlake and Corey Hart. Yep, it's their most popular songs, Sunglasses at Night and SexyBack. It's a simple yet effective mashup that is very catchy. The two worked together very well. Also simple yet effective is the YouTube video of the mashup.

A Long Time Ago, In A Blog Far Far Away...

Once again I direct you to the site known as Mashuptown. If you're not a regular viewer of that site, you should be. You can just about find something worthwhile on there if you visit just once a day.

For example, DJ Schmoli's mashup of Leona Lewis and Nirvana. It seems like that any song mashed up with Smells Like Teen Spirit, it's an automatic improvement. There's also Divide & Kreate somehow making I Kissed A Girl more tolerable to listen to, even with a God-awful sounding vocal that they had to work with. Then, there's people like DJ Y alias JY, who are newcomers (at least to me) who are also putting out good stuff.

Props also have to be given to Beloki, a German DJ who combined a Justice song (I should talk about them one of these days on my other music blog) with Darth Vader's theme, to great effect. The link is on that page. It's a long tune, so stick with it for a few minutes, where it really picks up and rocks out. Famous orchestral songs from movies should be used more often. That's why I liked it when awhile back Party Ben used the Imperial March and combined it with Galvanize.

Anyway, that was a friendly reminder telling you to visit that website. I'll be back late Friday night the 29th with more mashup discussion, at the very least.

Check Back Here Friday Night

This time it was Tropical Storm Fay that screwed up this blog's schedule. I was going to go to a Rays game against the Angels earlier on in the week but the storm coming through at that time meant that I had to wait until Wednesday to attend it; it was a fun game, even though the Rays lost.

Anyway, I'll be back Friday night and on here I will unveil what I think is the worst song of 2008; if I find any tune worse than this the rest of the year, I'll be shocked. I mean, I think it's even worse than what I believe (I can't remember for certain, but I doubt I said that any tune was worse than it during the time period) is the worst song of 2007, which is Cupid's Chokehold, where you had the sampled chorus of the song having nothing to do with the rest of the song! Yes, it's even worse than that.

On the mashup blog, it will be business as usual there.
