(Many Of) The Best Mashups Of 2008

Hello everyone. As 2008 winds down in a matter of hours (to me, this year flew by, but recent years have been that way to me), an easy (but yet very informative) way to do a last post here this year is to direct you to four different sources of mashups which people have judged to be the best ones created this year.

The first one is the release of Best of Bootie 2008, compiled by DJ's Adrian & The Mysterious D. Besides the mix of 20 tunes, the page offers additional mashups that they enjoyed. While I'm surprised at some of the tunes they chose, their other three releases were quality, so I'm sure this one will also be worth downloading.

The second page is from Culture Bully. Here you have the top 15 mashups of the year, as designated by Chris DeLine. I haven't really downloaded any of the songs I'm not familiar with yet, but I'm sure it's a fine collection. Right now I'm downloading the song he thought was the best, which somehow combines THIRTY-SIX different songs into a 4 minute tune. I don't know how it can be done either, but that should be enough of an enticement for you to check out the link.

The third page is from someone at Culture Bully. Here you can download a mix of different songs that are (at least in one person's opinion) the best of the year. You can even download a mix of all the songs combined together into an album format.

The fourth page is, yep, from Culture Bully. Here is a page which contains FIFTEEN different DJ's offering up their opinions on the best tunes. Believe me, from those four pages, you'll get dozens upon dozens of different tunes which will fill out at least a few different burned CD's.

I'll be back on Friday night the 9th with something new for this page. Have a good New Years Eve and New Years Day. It may be real late tonight, but I'll post something on my other music page.

Happy Holidays

Hello everyone. I apologize for this being up a little later than planned, but I had to do other things first, including watching the Bears win against the Packers last night.

I’ll wish everyone a Happy Holidays, no matter which holiday you do or don’t celebrate during this time of year. To me, the Christmas season isn’t the same as it was back when I was a kid. I could explain why I feel this way, but I’ll spare you all. It just isn’t the same, let me reiterate.

Personally, many of the Christmas mashups I've heard aren't for me; that isn't a comment on the job done on them by all the people who participate in that kind of stuff. They do a great job with it; it just doesn't usually tickle my fancy for some reason. But, as it's the season, if you want to listen to them to be full of mirth, you can download songs here and here. The latter has links to a few dozen X-mas tunes, especially if you click on the links at the bottom of the page.

For a non-Christmas song, here is one (located here) I found from a guy known as Terry Urban. I'm not too familiar with him and his work, but his combining A Milli and Viva la Vida is interesting (although I'm not sure yet if I can call it "good" or not; I just know it's been popular as of this week) and something you can put at the end of your mashup CD if you don't care for it yourself.

Happy Holidays, everyone, and I'll be back Wednesday the 31st with something new to spotlight.

Wild Mustang

I will continue my official/unofficial rule of bringing up all different mashup DJ's to spotlight on here. The newest one is a cat that broke out this year and has become popular, for good reason.

The man I'm referring to is the Dutch fellow known as MadMixMustang (M3), whose site is here. As Monday Night Football is about to start, I won't delve into which tracks you should download, although the MP3's that are mentioned as having been featured on radio or other blogs before is a good start. You can also download entire albums from him, which are worthwhile too.

As you can see from someone breaking out this year and becoming well known in this field, while the scene may not be as hyped as it was a few years ago, as long as people still have ideas to put the oddest songs together and they're able to do it well, then the mashup scene will still survive and probably thrive, in fact.

I'll be back a week from Monday with an appropriate seasonal mashup spotlight.

AC/DC Rules The Nation

To start things off, I’ll mention that an interesting read is here; it documents mashup DJ’s Adrian & The Mysterious D and their journey to Beijing to do a set there. I think Far East Asia is a very interesting place and one of these days I’d like to visit there, Lord willing.

To get on with it, the latest mashup I’ll spotlight is one I don’t believe I’ve posted on here before. I say that as before my old computer tower went kaput, I had a list of all the songs I have on here and my other music blog, and I had it burned to a disk. Where that disk is now, though… I guess I’ll do another list one of these days… “one of these days” meaning “before I do my next post on here”.

For now I’ll spotlight a song that I don’t believe I’ve mentioned before, and a mashup DJ I don’t believe I’ve mentioned before either. The track is on this Mashuptown page and it uses the music of Daft Punk’s Television Rules the Nation (from their Human After All album) and the vocals of AC/DC’s Back in Black. Sounds odd, but it works, and given that AC/DC is on the road now, it’s a natural to mention them at this time.

Here is Electrosound’s new page, by the way. If you want a link to the Frenchman’s page of downloads, go to this page here.

I’ll be back a week from tonight (as I have a busy Friday) with another mashup to spotlight, and by that point I’ll have an updated list for both of my blogs as to what exactly I’ve posted so far.

I'll Be Back Monday Night

At the last minute I ended up going out last night, and I have stuff planned this weekend, so my newest upload will be up Monday night.

Where's The Clown Fired From The Cannon?

Ok, sorry about the technical difficulties there. It wasn’t my fault, I swear!

It is common for songs by Britney (do I need to state the last name?) to be mashed up; I mean, with most of her songs, there is much room for improvement! Anyway, while looking at Hypem, I randomly found a mashup involving Britney combined with a DJ I am not familiar with. The song can be located here.

Truth be told, I don’t have much info about the song or the person who put it together. I’m not sure who this Matt Green guy is (it’s such a common name, you can guess what happens when you try and Google the name), and I am not too familiar with Martin Solveig aside from the info here, but the mashup of one of his songs and the title track from Britney's newest album, Circus (and yikes, the cover of the album is atrocious, and it looks more like a real sex doll than it does resemble Britney!) is very cool, although long at 7 1/2 minutes. I'm sure y'all will like a dance track on here, as I rarely post them.

I'll be back on Friday the 7th with a new mashup to spotlight.

Due To Technical Difficulties...

check back here Saturday night. It's not my fault this time, I swear!

Mashups Make Me Lose Control

As my computer is cooperating now (at least for today) I'm able to post this. As places like Mashuptown are rather quiet as of late, I decided to look through the list of mashups I still have on my computer and haven't burned to CD or a burned disc yet. I came across the name ComaR.

ComaR is a French mashup artist who has been doing this for awhile now. I was looking through his latest songs and I stumbled across one which combines a familiar rap song with a new wave-ish song from the 80's that you don't hear on the radio, but the group is certainly well know. ComaR's Atomic Control uses the vocals of the Missy Elliott/Ciara song Lose Control over the music of Blondie's Atomic (and some vocals from that are used also); it's not complicated, but it works well together. I'll be back Friday night the 28th (barring any further problems) with a new mashup to spotlight.

Friday, November 21, 2008

Yep, More Computer Problems

Unfortunately, today has spawned more computer problems, and it's a miracle I can even post anything tonight. I was able to post something on my other music blog, so you can check that out tonight; I'd rather not take a chance trying to post something here tonight (plus, I'm going out in a little bit to a magical place) so I'll post something here (barring any setbacks) tomorrow night.

The Only God I Need Is The Ace Of Spades

I'll be lazy here and bring up a song that was recently mentioned on Mashuptown in this post. I have to mentioning it here as the song, from German mashup dude DJ Morgoth. Hearing Lemmy from Motorhead singing Ace of Spades over the Gorillaz's seminal hit Feel Good Inc. is rather bizarre, but somehow it works, IMO. Now, what few Motorhead songs I've heard are pretty cool, and the Gorillaz are hit and miss with me, but both of the songs on their own are great in their own way, and combining them wasn't a disaster but instead managed to work. I already provided the Mashuptown link where you can download it and see if you feel the same way.

I'll be back in a week's time with another mashup to spotlight.

I Can Be Your Hyperspace

Tonight I will bring up (again?) a popular site to find the most current mashups. That site is Mashupciti. I don't recall if I've brought it up before or not. I should have looked at the site again sooner, as I did see they had in fact a page up for Halloween mashups, and now none of the songs on that page are still up. D'oh!

The song I'll bring up is from yet another guy I haven't mentioned before, although this cat has been around for a few years now doing this craft. I'm referring to the Frenchman known as DJ Zebra. The tune in question is here and is known as Body Crazy, as it features The Beastie Boys and their hit Body Movin' singing over Prince's Let's Go Crazy. I liked how Zebra used the most recognizeable sections of Prince's classic tune to his advantage.

I'll be back a week from tonight with another mashup to spotlight.

I'm Back!

To copy and paste from my other music page:

Hello everyone. I do apologize for being gone for so long, but I wanted to make sure that my computer problems earlier in the month wouldn't return (eventually, they stopped), but now that things are fine...

Last night I posted a Halloween tune there; I didn't have the time to post any Halloween mashups here, although I haven't been able to find too many of those anyhow.

Tonight I will post a mashup of two memorable 80's songs mixed by a DJ that I'm surprised I haven't brought up yet in this blog. The song is from DJ Tripp and it's entitled Don't Go Weird, as it combines Weird Science and Don't Go, from Oingo Boingo and Yaz (a.k.a. Yazoo), respectively. It's a simple yet effective combination of 80's pop.

DJ Tripp-Don't Go Weird (6.35 MB, 192Kbits/second)

By the way, I found the above link at this link, which features many different remixes of popular 80's songs. If you're a fan of that genre, you should probably bookmark it.

I'll be back on Friday night the 7th with a new mashup to spotlight. Oh, and don't forget to set your clocks back tonight.

Unfortunate News

As I've mentioned elsewhere, earlier today the computer I use at home went kaput. So, until I can get that fixed (either via having the tower fixed or getting a new one) I won't be online too much in the near future, and of course I won't be able to do this. So, I'll announce now that I'll be taking the rest of the month off and on November 1, I will return with a new post.

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Hey!

As I've mentioned before, the amount of people out there who have done worthwhile mashups is rather large, so for the most part, since I've been doing this there hasn't been too many artists I've spotlighted more than once. The trend will continue tonight, as I'll present to you a song by Seattle DJ Victor Menegaux. Last year he combined two songs which don't have a lot in common, aside from the constant use of one phrase, and that is "Hey!", which made it a natural to put together, and like peanut butter and bananas, it proves tastier than you may expect.

What I Like About Crunk combines The Romantics and their hit What I Like About You with Lil Jon's Snap Yo Fingers. Sounds odd, yes, but it works. You can download it here at a Mashuptown page which still has a working link for it. Heck, even the video for the mashup manages to work, despite how different the two acts and the original videos for the songs are.

One of these days I'll find another usage of Snap Yo Fingers, where it was combined with... The Pina Colada song? Yes! I'll be back on Friday night the 10th with a new mashup for your ears and eyes.

I Rock S*** Like Ronnie Dio

I'll keep it simple at this late hour. I'll post the full version of a song that was on the great Best of Bootie 2007 CD download. I say "full" as on the 2007 CD, they cut out the last half minute or so of the song (which is an instrumental, but still), so I figured I should direct you to my upload of the original.

The tune I'm talking about is More Than On Point, by DJ Topcat, combining Boston's More Than A Feeling with House of Pain's On Point. Yep, an obvious connection with both groups sharing the same hometown. It becomes a very catchy song, as the riff on More Than A Feeling is a classic. Whether or not the riff is borrowed from Louie Louie (or likewise, borrowed by Kurt Cobain for Smells Like Teen Spirit) is up for debate, but no matter the case, I'm glad it was used, and it turned out to be a great mashup.

Now, there is a 2008 version of the song on Topcat's website. Go ahead and download it. But, note that it's different from what he released last year; 2008 is fine, but I prefer the original one just a little bit more, so here it is.

DJ Topcat-More Than On Point (6.47 MB, 192Kbits/second)

Like I said on my other blog, I'll be back on the 30th, due to me being preoccupied with a pair of great wrestling shows this upcoming weekend.

Check Back Monday Night

I was busy on my other music page uploading and then talking about a pair of songs, so I'd rather do what I wanted to do tonight on Monday night rather than half-ass it by doing it now.

In the meanwhile, to get some new mashups, check out the Bootie Blog.

I'll Show You Magic

To copy and paste what I wrote on my other page:

To start this off I will mention that I now rip songs onto my computer using a different service. Up to a few days ago I used Roxio. But, I grew tired of it and I mainly used Nero to make burned CD's or DVD's of videos/data. So I uninstalled Roxio… before thinking about what I would use to rip songs onto my computer.

But, I realized that Windows Media Player, which I of course have, has the option of ripping music. So, I tried that and that's what I should have been using all along. I mean, more often than not it'll recognize the song, artist, and album that is being ripped, which is handy in various ways, including putting stuff on your hard drive so that you can play it in Audiosurf. Trust me on this.

Ok, now let's move along...

Sometimes I stumble upon mashups in the strangest of places. For example, at Madsplash, a wrestling page devoted to Japanese wrestling. They have a themes page and on THIS particular page you can get the theme to Skayde, which happens to be a mashup. It's a combo of Magic Stick and The Stroke, if you can believe it. Even more surprising, it was on a legit album. It was by Inhumanz. I'm not too familiar with them but this tune is pretty rad, so that's a feather in their cap. Now that you have the link, go download it.

I'll be back around this time a week from now.

Monday, September 8, 2008

Yeah!

On my other music blog I talked about the late Jerry Reed and offered up a link in there that will direct you to several other blogs talking about him and posting his most famous tunes.

Back in this entry I briefly mentioned how Reed's East Bound and Down was combined by Pheugoo with Usher's Yeah!, to great effect. Well, I'll finally offer up a direct link to it, even though it's easy to find on Project Playlist. Here is the direct download of a song that you wouldn't think would work, but by Joe does work.

I'll be back on Friday night, and this time I'll be more punctual.

Check Back Monday Night

I apologize for another delay, but since Friday night I've been swamped with things, from seeing the first two Indiana Jones movies on the big screen, to spending most of the day on the Atlantic coast of Florida. I'll have something up Monday night, I promise.

Feeling Cheeky

On this late Friday night, I will post another mashup tune from the UK, where definitely this trend has always been most popular there compared to the rest of the world.

The tune is from the Brit known as Cheekyboy. His main site is down for some reason, but I provided the link to the sites of his that still work (showing that he apparently is still in the game). The song I'm linking to here in particular (which I uploaded myself as I can't find it anywhere else) is a combination of Justin Timberlake and Corey Hart. Yep, it's their most popular songs, Sunglasses at Night and SexyBack. It's a simple yet effective mashup that is very catchy. The two worked together very well. Also simple yet effective is the YouTube video of the mashup.

A Long Time Ago, In A Blog Far Far Away...

Once again I direct you to the site known as Mashuptown. If you're not a regular viewer of that site, you should be. You can just about find something worthwhile on there if you visit just once a day.

For example, DJ Schmoli's mashup of Leona Lewis and Nirvana. It seems like that any song mashed up with Smells Like Teen Spirit, it's an automatic improvement. There's also Divide & Kreate somehow making I Kissed A Girl more tolerable to listen to, even with a God-awful sounding vocal that they had to work with. Then, there's people like DJ Y alias JY, who are newcomers (at least to me) who are also putting out good stuff.

Props also have to be given to Beloki, a German DJ who combined a Justice song (I should talk about them one of these days on my other music blog) with Darth Vader's theme, to great effect. The link is on that page. It's a long tune, so stick with it for a few minutes, where it really picks up and rocks out. Famous orchestral songs from movies should be used more often. That's why I liked it when awhile back Party Ben used the Imperial March and combined it with Galvanize.

Anyway, that was a friendly reminder telling you to visit that website. I'll be back late Friday night the 29th with more mashup discussion, at the very least.

Friday, August 22, 2008

Check Back Here Friday Night

This time it was Tropical Storm Fay that screwed up this blog's schedule. I was going to go to a Rays game against the Angels earlier on in the week but the storm coming through at that time meant that I had to wait until Wednesday to attend it; it was a fun game, even though the Rays lost.

Anyway, I'll be back Friday night and on here I will unveil what I think is the worst song of 2008; if I find any tune worse than this the rest of the year, I'll be shocked. I mean, I think it's even worse than what I believe (I can't remember for certain, but I doubt I said that any tune was worse than it during the time period) is the worst song of 2007, which is Cupid's Chokehold, where you had the sampled chorus of the song having nothing to do with the rest of the song! Yes, it's even worse than that.

On the mashup blog, it will be business as usual there.

The Heat Is On

As I've mentioned before, I'm trying so far to spotlight different mashup artists rather than posting multiple songs at different times from the same artist. You know, there are many different people out there who do quality work, and I want to try and point out many of them.

One guy who I'm surprised I haven't mentioned yet is DJ Axel, an L.A. based artist. Besides having a cool handle that references a famous movie character, many of his songs are worth hearing. In the "music" section of his website, if you click on it there's a popup which offers up a dozen mashup downloads. You might as well download all of them, although I personally like best the Nelly-Fat Joe vs. Cheryl Lynn, the Motley Crue vs. 50 Cent, and the Judas Priest vs. LL Cool J/J-Lo mashups. I'm glad he's still around doing his thing and making tunes. The fact that he often uses rock songs (especially classic rock) in his work... real groovy.

I'll be back on Wednesday the 13th with me mentioning another mashup artiste.

Monday, August 4, 2008

Damn You, Busy Weekend

Unfortunately the past few days have been busier than expected, so it won't be until Tuesday evening that I upload something new. I can at least tell you that on Saturday I got a new LG Chocolate cell phone (with the V-Cast) and the Song ID feature actually works, as fantastical as it may sound. I have zero clue how it does work, but I can tell you, the son of a bitch DOES work!

Don't Cha Wish They Were Still Around?

Here is another song from a mashup artist who used to do his thing back in the day but by the present day, seemed to vanish off the face of the Earth, or at least the mashup world.

It is Sam Flanagan. The only info I have on him is in this random forum post. It's a shame he vanished, given that he obviously had some positive press at the time. This song is Don't Cha Beat It, which combines The Pussycat Dolls and Michael Jackson; you should be able to figure out on your own which two songs were used. To me it's another case of a mashup making a previously intolerable song something that I can digest. Really, I thought that Don't Cha was annoying and stupid (no offense to the writer of the song... Cee-Lo!) Combining it with one of Michael's most famous songs was a very wise move.

By the way, there's also another version of the mashup, where Aggro1 (hopefully he'll return to the mashup world one of these days) took it and modified it. No offense to 1, but I prefer Sam's original mashup just a little bit more. You can view 1's version here in this YouTube video.

Here is my upload of Sam's original mashup.

This Is How We Doobie, Part 2

A *little* late, but hey, it so happens that the Good Blimey mashups page is up again (although beware that sometimes it may be down), so from there you can download the mashup that puts together the music from What A Fool Believes to the rapping of This Is How We Do It. Kenny Loggins (not to mention that crappy Michael McDonald) have never sounded so cool. Yeah, I prefer the earlier Doobies.

To find the tune on the Good Blimey music player, it's in Volume 1. To download it, use the arrow at the right. Left click it. To download it, use the "save as" feature under "file" and it should work... at least if you're using Firefox 2. If you're using something else... but the page also has instructions on how to download songs.

I'll be back on Friday the 25th with a new mashup to spotlight.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

This Is How We Doobie, Part 1

Yeah, this is the song that I should have put up when it was around 4:20 time, but alas, I don't think I found it until after that date.

Here is another song from a mashup artist that was doing his thing a few years ago, but apparently isn't involved in the racket anymore. It is DJ Jay-R, a.k.a. C.H.A.O.S. Productions. I know he is (was?) from Oakland, but that's about it for info.

Oh fudge, I thought that the Good Blimey sight that I found this (and many other) tune on would still be up, but it apparently vanished off the face of the Earth. Sigh. I guess I'll finish this late Tuesday night. For now I'll whet your appetite by showing you a YouTube video of the tune that I'll upload myself for download. Yes, it's Montell Jordan vs. The Doobie Brothers!

Check Back In 24 Hours

n/a. Long story, but I'll have something up in about 24 hours time.

Sunday, July 6, 2008

Too Hot To Give It Up

Here's a song that combines two 70's artists. I'm sure you've heard of one of them, but the other you are most likely less familiar with.

The song is DJ Riko's Too Hot To Give It Up, which is easily found on his Tunes page. You have the acapella of Got to Give It Up, by the great Marvin Gaye, with the music of UFO's Too Hot To Handle. UFO is obscure these days, but from what little I heard of them, they're pretty cool. I don't know why you never hear them on the radio. At least this way you can see that they're pretty damn cool, and you may want to hunt for their songs. It works rather well with Gaye's vocal.

I'll be back on Sunday the 13th.

Why This Is So Late

I do apologize for getting this up so late but I was just swamped with things to do and be involved with the past few days. Sorry, bros and sisters.

Anyway, to try and make it up, here are some random links that may possibly be of interest:

Mashstix, which is a page of free mashups and other doo-dads.

Here is a mashup blog from Mutant Pop.

I'll be back during this upcoming weekend, and I will be more punctual this time.

A Combo Akin To A Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich

I was going to put this up on Wednesday night but got sidetracked until now; my apologies. My next mashup spotlight will be a week from tonight, I promise.

I'm sure many of you know that one of Elvis's favorite dishes was a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich. To me at least it sounds like an odd combo, but back in 2003 when I was in Memphis for a few days with some friends for Spring Break, I ate at a restaurant that offered up the dish, and it was pretty damned good. To me that's what mashups can be like too; putting together two or more things that you'd swear would never go together well, but end up doing so. For example, the song I'm spotlighting here...

The industrial metal band known as Rammstein and the 80's rap duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock are two groups that you would swear could never go together in any way, yet with Sean McColgan's It Takes Du, he combined the former's Du Hast and the latter's It Takes Two to great effect, with the music from the metal band and the rapping from the rappers. It works very well, take my word for it. There's also a brief cameo from a famous disco song from the late 70's. I'm sure you'll like it as much as I do.

Note that I haven't been able to find any working website for Sean McColgan (SMC) but I did find a working link for the mashup, so that's what I'm using here.

My Grapevine Life

Here is a mashup I downloaded a few years ago, but still enjoy even to this day. It is from Steve Lima, otherwise known as Futuro. The track is not available at his page, though, so I'll host it myself. I'm not familiar with the other stuff he's done, but quite frankly, when you create a great song like this, that's how I'll forever remember you by.

He combined Marvin Gaye's version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine with the 80's song It's My Life by Talk Talk; here, I prefer the original to the remake that was out a few years ago, although I first heard the No Doubt version and it took some time before I found out it wasn't an original by them! Whoops. Anyhow, if you enjoy both songs (or even if you don't) then you should enjoy this also, as they go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Christina Aguilera Plus Jazz?

Here is a mashup from a few years ago that isn't perfect, but for some reason it came to mind earlier in the day and from back in the day, I remember hearing that some random radio stations played this tune, mainly for shock value and the bizarre juxtaposition.

The tune is by some random dude named Rikki Rok. His old website isn't up anymore and there's a very old messageboard that he used to run. I can tell you he's from the UK but that's about it. At least he graced us for a brief time before retiring; the mashup road is littered with cases such as this. With Rok, he presented to us Christina Aguilera's Dirrty and combined it with a song from the New Orleans Jazz Band! Yes, strange, but at least it's good for a laugh. Check Back Here in 24 Hours

Unfortunately I was pressed for time tonight so 24 hours from now I'll have up a song.

Someone from Pop Bytes found the last post and commented on it. The reason why all lowercase (or all uppercase) irks me so much is that besides the fact that all lowercase just looks unprofessional (no offense) and for me at least I would have to force myself to type that way-and with uppercase, TYPING LIKE THIS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING IN MOST PLACES-is of course my problems with local wrestling messageboards (now just messageboard) where you have some dumbshit kids (I call them kids as that's how they act; "toddlers" may be the best term, though) who think it's ok to troll (even though "internet troll" means the same thing as "person with extremely tiny genitals) innocent people when they'd soil themselves if the people they harrassed actually confronted them face to face and the harrassee wanted them to back up the awful things they said. Anyway, they don't do the uppercase shit but they do the lowercase shit, only because in the past I stated that I hated all lowercase; yes, those stupid fracking toadies-along with their main leader-have been doing that for many months now just to make me mad. No kidding. Those guys are horrible human beings and if they would all be on a bus driven by Freddy Kreuger and drive off a cliff (reference to Part 2) then the world would be a better place.

Anyway... I'm not saying that the people behind Pop Bytes are trolls or possess tiny genitals or anything like that. I just wanted to explain why all lowercase puts a burr under my saddle, although I really do think it looks unprofessional and a lame attempt at being "edgy" or "cool".

An Aggravating Site, Except For...

I almost hate linking to this website only due to their puerile and plain f*cking stupid insistence on not using the shift or caps key at all (reminds me of the main posters on a terrible local independent wrestling messageboard (at least that's what it was; it's now really a clubhouse or sandbox for a bunch of "adults" who really act like they are all 4 year olds), but even with that infantile mindset on their part-and don't even ask me how the content on the rest of their site is-a nice place to find mashups is Popbytes and their Mashup of the Week page.

The selections are chosen by DJ Paul V., who has done the Smash Mix on Indie 103.1 for the past few years now. The Smash Mix is a 20 minute or so collection of mashups, remixes, and regular songs that Paul digs. The Popbytes page has a really sweet collection of mashups, almost all of which are worth downloading; I believe that as of now all of the 106 mashups on the page are up and ready for a DL.

As usual I'll be back a week from tonight.

He's Back!

I don't have a proper upload for tonight (by the way, I'm doing it at this time as I just got back from the wonderful location known as Mako's and I wasn't able to do this before I headed off to the happiest place on Earth) but I still have something worthwhile to mention at this late hour.

Remember how I mentioned recently in a blog that Get Home Productions, arguably the best mashup artist that there's ever been, retired awhile back? Well, like most retirements, that was short-lived, as he returned to the mashup business and released a (free) album of new tunes. Check it out on this page.

As typical as of late, I'll be back this upcoming Friday.

I Be On Dat Kryptonite

Again, I apologize for this being up much later than planned, but when you had most of your music files vanish for no reason at all and you get lucky that they return after a restart, you don't really feel like doing one of these, you know. But, things are fine now, so I'll get to one of the best mashup DJ's that I haven't gotten to yet. For the most part I haven't repeated myself while doing this. I've presented one song from each mashup DJ and I haven't brought up that DJ again; you know, there are many quality people out there who I feel like I should spotlight.

This is the first time I'll mention DJ BC on here. He's a Boston DJ who has created many tracks worth downloading from his discography page. One page in particular is for the tune Powers of Kryptonite, where Quincy Jones's Soul Bossa Nova (i.e. the theme song from Austin Powers) is combined with the Big Boi & The Purple Ribbon All Stars hit Kryptonite. The page has three versions: an unedited version, an edited version, and an instrumental. It's quite catchy, as the original Kryptonite was. There are other songs on his page which are worth checking out. You might as well download as many as you can so that you can judge on your own which is the best.

I'll be back Friday night with a new tune.

A Change Of Plans

I was going to mention a mashup tonight but I've been tied up until this point (yes, that's why I'm up this late and doing this at this time) with some computer problems. I'm talking about "most of my music files disappearing for no reason at all", so I had to restart the computer, thank the Gods that all those files returned after the restart, and then copy the music files onto a pair of DVD discs in order to make sure I have that stuff archived. So, I'll post something on Monday night instead.

Happy 4/20, Everyone!

I was hoping to find a mashup song out there that's somewhat related to today being 420, and via the last line in the song (which alas is edited in the mashup, but if you've heard the original before you'll know what was edited) I was able to pick this out.

It's a mashup from some group (I presume a radio station, but I can find no knowledge of it) called 99X Mashes that combines Guns N' Roses's Paradise City with Snoop Dogg/Dr. Dre's The Next Episode. It's known as Dog Pound Paradise and it's very well done.

You can dowload it here, at a Mashuptown page that still has a working MP3 link.

Anyway, I'll be back by Friday night with a new tune to upload for your pleasure.

Kurt Cobain vs. Beyonce?

On my other blog I just posted a great new track from Soulwax; those guys also dabble in mashups from time to time. Arguably the best one they did is one that has gotten pub on many different pages.

Yes, they actually combined Smells Like Teen Spirit by the great Nirvana (really, the only grunge band that I can more than tolerate a little bit... ok wait, I do like some Alice in Chains tunes also) with Destiny's Child's Bootylicious. Now, I detest most of the songs from that girl group (including Bootylicious, even though bootylicious women CAN be great) but combining it with arguably one of the greatest rock songs ever was a stroke of genius. They only put the Beyonce vocals over the Nirvana music, but it works great.

I'll be back Sunday night.

Yet Another Great DJ From San Francisco

One person who I should have mentioned here before today is someone that many say is among the best (if not the best) mashup artists out there currently. It is Party Ben, and to be honest it's impossible to pick out one song to spotlight as so many of them are worthy of a listen, and a plethora are available for download on his website.

For example, I liked his Callin' Up The Pieces where he put together The Average White Band and Lyrics Born; it's also interesting that it's pretty funky and has rapping yet only one person in the combo is black. Go figure.

His Genius of London tune is a near-miracle in that it made London Bridge into a more than tolerable song. Yes, one of the worst songs I've ever heard, made acceptable! As long as you ignore Fergie's horrid voice (but unfortunately Heart wasn't able to), then it's worth downloading.

Apparently a lot of people hate his Wipeout Taffy but putting together The Surfaris and D4L was genius.

Two that you must get are... the first is Promiscuous With You; yes, it made the Nelly Furtado song into something you can listen to without changing the station or skipping to the next track. The fan-made mashup video is pretty bad-ass too.

The second is something that's incredible. It is Galvanize the Empire; yes, the Chemical Brothers song combined with Darth Vader's theme! It works amazingly well and several fan-made videos have been put on YouTube. It's a must-download, IMO.

Anyway, hopefully you were cherry-pick a few of his songs, as they deserve to be on your harddrive.

I'll be back a week from today with the next mashup to spotlight.

I Am A Nightmare Walking

If you haven't looked yet, head over to my other blog where I posted a new song a few minutes ago. The mashup I'm posting today is a half hour long mix where the first song uses the music from that track over a different vocal.

DJ Riko, from San Diego, is best known for what has to be one of the best mashups of all time, P-Funk Is Playing At My House, a much better version of Daft Punk Is Playing At My House* which used a new female vocal and samples from George Clinton's musical empire. The mix I'm highlighting includes the song, along with a few others Riko has done before. The mix is on his tunes page as "Superchunk Mix" and it's about a 40 MB download. All the samples are listed, although many of them are for a song in the middle where Riko includes bits of whistling from many different songs.

· Truth be told I heard the mashup before I heard the original. Once I did hear the original I thought the tune was ruined by a truly awful vocal so I think P-Funk is clearly superior to the hipster bullshit from LCD Soundsystem.

The first song in the mix is the one I'm pointing out. It takes the Lemon Jelly song and adds a vocal from Ice-T over it. It works quite well; the rest of the mix is also worth hearing.

I'll be back a week from today with a new mashup to spotlight.

What Is It Good For?

This is another case of a song on here being connected with a song I posted onYet Another Idiot With A Music Blog. You can read that post here, as the song I'm spotlighting here is a mashup that includes said track.

Pheugoo is a mashup DJ from the Netherlands who has put together some quality work. For example (and the link is not on his page although he has it hidden on his page) he created a song that combined two tunes about as far away from each other in terms of style as you can get in popular music. He had the rapping of Usher, Luda, and Lil Jon in Yeah over the music of… Jerry Reed's Eastbound and Down, from Smokey & The Bandit! Seriously. It actually works too. If you search for it on Project Playlist you'll find it.

The tune I'm spotlighting here can also be found on Project Playlist, as again it's a hidden link. It's Robot Wars (Release The Beast), acknowledging that it's a combination of Release The Best and the Edwin Starr tune War, and that the former was sampled for Robot Rock. It's a great combo.

Urgent Signs

Yep, this will be another case of a rock song's music being combined with a rap tune's vocals, but this one is extremely good and I'm shocked I haven't posted it yet.

The tune is from Lock3down, a mashup artist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. There are several tracks that I feel are especially worthy of download, although I will only point out one (as hey, who knows what you the listener may prefer so you can try them all out and keep the ones you like, you know). This particular one combines the Snoop Dogg/Justin Timberlake song Signs with Foreigner's Urgent. Foreigner! Not too surprisingly, it's known as Urgent Signs. The combination proves to be great as the way Lock3down put it all together was A+ You'll probably dig it also. The music video for it is pretty cool also.

I'll be back Monday night with another mashup to spotlight.

Yet Another Post Where I List Several Links

Hey, I'm sorry, but I wanted this up before midnight my time, so here you go. It's still an interesting post, I think.

First, here is a link to many mashup videos.

If you ever want to try and make a mashup of your own, use this website as a guide. I've never tried it myself, but maybe one of these days...

Finally... here is a newish forum for mashups, known as The Laptop Punk Mash Up Forum.

I'll be back on Thursday night.

Plugging Another Blog

I know I've mentioned it before, but The Bootie Blog is a great place to go to find some of the best matchups of the preceding month. It's run by DJ's Adrian & The Mysterious D.

They didn't do one for January tunes, but earlier this month they posted their February ditties that they enjoyed the most. I've heard all of them and many of them are well worth downloading. You also get explanations for why the songs were chosen. Hey, it's more interesting than me writing about one song on here.

I'll be back a week from today with me pointing out one song and spotlighting it. Hey, I don't think I'll have that much free time the next 7 days, so there you go.

Victim of Da Funk

A rather odd "real life" moment happened just earlier today, when I was in a local Best Buy when I saw none other than retired basketball (and current assistant coach for the Orlando Magic) Patrick Ewing walk into the store and start looking at DVD's! I kid you not. I didn't go up to him and get a picture or an autograph, but it still makes for an interesting story to tell, as this is the first time I've ever encountered a random celebrity doing a regular mundane thing such as purchasing DVD's.

Today I will spotlight a mashup DJ who apparently isn't in this business anymore-given that his website hasn't been updated in more than a year and I haven't heard anything new from him in that time-but he was great while he was around.

I am refering to DJ John, a guy who put together multiple tunes into a cohesive whole. Arguably his best song (and undeniably his most popular tune) was Victim of Da Funk, which mainly combined Daft Punk's Da Funk and the Eagles' Victim of Love, but also has bits and pieces of other songs. It can be found easily on the mashups page on his website; all the songs there are still available for download. This ranks very high on the short list of the best mashups I've ever heard. Many of the other songs there are also worth a download. It's a shame he doesn't make mashups anymore, but those tunes will be around forever.

Check back here Friday night, where I will spotlight the next mashup.

Work It With A Fury

Today's mashup spotlight will be on a guy whose songs I've downloaded for a few years now (and who has a really good July 05 hour long mix that I recommend); the guy calls himself Solcofn and he is from Washington, D.C.

The song that I'm pointing out is in the "mash ups" section under "2007"; you can search the page and you'll find the tune Work It With A Fury. It uses the vocals of a rap song over the music of a electronic song from one of the most well-known personalities in that genre.

The vocals are from the Missy Elliott song Work It and the music is from a Chemical Brothers song; the title of that song is unknown to me. Not too surprisingly, Missy is one of the most popular people to have their songs mashed up, to various degrees of goodness. I think this is one of the best ones, as the music fits the rapping very well.

I'll be back on Tuesday afternoon (probably in the latter part of the afternoon) where I will spotlight yet another mashup.

Ah Ha, Ah Ha, This Tune's Staying Alive

On Monday I posted a link to Good Blimey's huge collection of mashups. Since then, I figured out the easy way to download the songs from the playlists (I use Firefox, and in the file section there's a "Save Page As..." feature; ridiculously easy, and I only figured it out now...) and listened to a smattering of those tunes. There are many gems in there, but so far the best one is from a person or group that as far as I know doesn't make mashups anymore.

I really can't tell you much of anything about Batchelor Royale, except that he/they were around a few years ago. I recognize the name but I don't recall hearing any B.R. songs before. The one I'm talking about here combines two common tunes that get mashed up, Usher's Yeah! and the Bee Gee's Stayin' Alive. Actually, this tune mainly uses the N-Trance remix of the song, but some of the original vocals are also there. There is another surprise sample or two in the mix. Overall, it's a kick-ass mashup and it's unfortuate that B.R. doesn't appear to be in this field anymore.

Here is a direct download link to the song:

I'll be back on Saturday (probably in the evening) with a new mashup to spotlight.

A Correction, Re: A Recent Post

Recently, I posted a blog that contained a song from Aggro1. He himself commented and stated,

Aggro1 is actually from Dayton, Ohio.

Hustle Athletics is actually a moniker of the DnB group more commonly known as Noisia.

Thx for the mention.

Believe me, I was very flattered that he saw the blog and commented on it. My apologies for the confusion as to where you lived. I think I got you confused with DJ Earworm or something.

In a few minutes, a post where I spotlight a song from a few years ago.

Several Quick Links

I'll actually do something a little different tonight. I'll only post a few random mashup links.

The first one is Mashupciti, which is a site that hosts streaming mashups (that you can also download via the "divShare" link) and it's a variety of artists I have not heard of before but just from a cursory glance, some of these cats are quite good.

The second is Mashstix, a similar site to the above. There, you can vote on which songs you think are the best.

Finally, if you want an 18GB(!) music player that streams mashups from a few years ago (you CAN download any individual songs, although they open in a Quicktime file that plays the song, and for me at least those are usually a bitch to try and convert in a download, but Lord knows you can't be picky about it when you can download 18 gigs of mashups!) , go here and listen to the hundreds of songs he has there. I'm sure that when you find songs you like, you can search for them online and some of them shouldn't be too difficult to find and download.

I'll be back Wednesday night, this time with one song spotlighted.

Light It Up And Take A Puff...

It's not often that I hear mashups out in the public, but when I do it's a pleasant surprise. For example, what happened to me in May of 2005 when I was in another state, at a family member's graduation. The night before the graduation, I was at the apartment of that family member's friend (someone who I'd known for a long while myself) and there was alcohol consumed and music listened to. Most of the songs were hip-hop in nature (although there was also the song Banana Phone by Raffi; don't ask!) but there was one mashup, one which I'd heard months before. If they had it on their Winamp player in MP3 form, then it must have been a cult hit and got some mainstream attention; that always makes me happy.

It was a song from DJ Mei-Lwun, an Asian spinner from California who really only had one famous mashup, but what a tune it was. It's Sweet Home Country Grammar, where Nelly's Country Grammar was combined with Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama! Simple yet very effective. Unfortunately, Mei-Lwun's page doesn't have any working downloads of the song. But, I did find a working link at a random site, so I'll post it.

You Can Check Out But Never Leave

Today I will profile one of the most unique sounding (yet great) mashups I've ever heard, and I'll upload the song myself due to the downloads at that guy's website not working at the moment.

The song is from Aggro1, a guy who I believe is from California. What makes him stand out is that he enjoys using hard rock/classic rock songs in his mashups, something that isn't done as often as you'd think. The tune I'm talking about today doesn't have an official name but I can tell you what two ditties were put together to create it.

The music is from a drum & bass group called Hustle Athletics. I really have no info on them except that the particular song used was called San Francisco, and yes it has a cowbell, which is why the obvious video was fanmade by someone and posted on the streaming video sites. The other song I'm sure all of you know. The vocals are from Hotel California by the Eagles! Personally, while I've never detested the song, I think it's overrated and there are several songs from them I prefer a lot more. Then again, I also think the same of Stairway to Heaven. But, with this mashup, it makes that overfamiliar yet still highly regarded classic rock staple sound fresh and badass.

I Like The Way She Moves

Here is a mashup artist who recently has gotten some mainstream attention. DJ Earworm, from San Francisco, recently got a song that he mashed onto the Top 100 of the Top 40 format chart. That song was The United States of Pop, where he combined the top TWENTY-FIVE songs on the Billboard Charts from 2007 into one whole. There's even a video for it. It was very well done, but not the song I'll be spotlighting here.

Earworm almost always combines together several different songs into one, usually involving alternative artists; so, sometimes I like the songs and others I don't, but that's only due to my distaste of much alternative music rather than the skill Earworm used in combining the tunes. Here, though, in the song I Like The Way Jenny Scrubs (which can be downloaded here), we hear several ladies rap over a great music track, which is a remix of the BodyRockers song I Like The Way (You Move), not to be confused with the Outkast ditty.

The ladies you hear rapping (and again, it was put together well) are J-Lo, Missy Elliott, and TLC. If you like dance-y songs, then give this a try.

I'll be back Saturday night, a day after my 27th birthday, to post a new song, which may or may not deal with the birthday.

Not Really A Valentine's Day Love Song, But...

Sometimes, even regular DJ's who randomly do a mashup on their own produce a tune that is worth hearing. For example, one that I found online from some random site (which I can't locate now, so I'll have to upload it myself onto my Fileden account).

DJ Ayres is a guy who apparently lives in or near New York City... and that's all that I really know about him. A few months back I found a remix he did of the Ying Yang Twins/Pitbull song Shake. It happens to be mashed up with a song from the 80's that is very popular in some circles. It is sampled often. In fact, even Heidi Montag used it in a song (no, not the God-awful song that went along with that God-awful video that was just released)

I am talking about Yazoo (or Yaz, and I'm not talking about the prescription drug) and their hit Situation. It was well-done by Ayres. I mean, both tunes are used often by mashup artists, but this combo happened to be a nice match.

Final Countdown, Hell Yeah!

For those of you who read my post which discussed the song The Girls, here is a mashup where that tune is involved.

It was part of an album that team9 did for the Stereogum website (which is where you go to download it), which while not my cup of tea at all, is still a major music site and thus a great "mainstream" way for a mashup artist to get much exposure.

This tune is Countdown To Girls, which actually is mainly Europe's Final Countdown mixed with Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls, along with some random electro effects that I believe team9 created themselves. But, it's still something I wanted to spotlight, as it did what I thought would be impossible and that would be making Sean Kingston tolerable!

Actually, I shouldn't really say that as I thought the other singles I heard from his album were better (yes, I even enjoyed the song that was really a remake of Led Zeppelin's D'yer Maker!), such as Take You There. I just thought that Beautiful Girls was bad, and yet that was the song that you know he'll forever be remembered for.

Anyhow, team9 does a great job of combining the music from the all-time classic Europe song with Sean's vocals, and you also have the brief cameos from Harris. It's worth hearing no matter what you think of the artists involved.

Also, another good mashup involving Final Countdown is Divide & Kreate's Counting Rockets, which combines it with Elton John's Rocket Man, believe it or not. It works really well, too. In the future I know I'll post a song or two from D&K officially.

Anyhow, I'll be back a week from tonight where I will spotlight another mashup.

The Art of Mashup Albums

I haven't really mentioned on here before how it's a popular trend for either one DJ or a slew of them collaborating together in order to create an album that is of one artist or one style.

For example, a recent album that DJ Schmolli did. He is from Austria so that is why he paid tribute to someone who-for better or for worse-is the most famous singer from the country. The guy I'm talking about... Falco! I can't say that I've heard more than his 2 most famous songs but those songs are 80's classics in many circles.

The song I'll point out from the tribute album (Falco Re:Loaded) is the tune he'll forever be connected to, Rock Me Amadeus. This version is rather simple and the song isn't revolutionary or mindblowing. But, it's a lot of fun. The music is from Amadeus and the singing is from various rappers, such as Rakim and J-Kwon, but mainly the rapping is from Nelly and Luniz. It sounds like an odd combo but it works. Like I said, it's fun.

You can find info on the album here and you can download the tracks individually here. DJ Schmolli is a pretty good mashup artist and if nothing else you should enjoy Mash Me Amadeus and Funky Kommissar.

I'll be back Thursday night with a spotlight on another mashup artist and one of his (or her!) songs.
